120422 Baan Doi Pui to Buddha’s Footprint

Viewpoint at Buddha's Footprint

This is a hike from Baan Doi Pui to Buddha’s Footprint and back. The first part of the hike has not too many ups and downs and leads through forest area on the slopes below Doi Pui. The Baan Doi Pui village is at an elevation of about 1250 meter, and after 3 km hiking we are at about 1350 meter, so only 100 meter higher. The next part of the hike involves some climbing over a distance of about 1 km which takes us to the Buddha Footprint Viewpoint at an elevation of about 1500 meters. Here we will rest a bit and eat our snacks/lunch. If the air is clear you can see Doi Inthanon to the South and Chiang Dao to the North. After our snack break we continue just a few hundred meters along a ridge to make a small loop which will take us back below the viewpoint until it joins again with the track we climbed up. From there we follow the same trail back to Baan Doi Pui. Total distance will be about 10 km.

Here are some maps showing the area of the hike and a picture at the viewpoint.

If you want to join

Just turn up at the meeting place on the day. There is no need to let us know you are coming unless you are coming in a big group.

Meeting Place

We will meet at 8:00 AM sharp at the Arboretum. Depending on how many people show up, we then go to Baan Doi Pui in available cars or we will take a Song Taew.

Cost

Transportation from the meeting point.
We either share cars if there are enough spaces in cars to fit everybody in, or we take a Song Taew. We would suggest a small donation to the driver towards petrol for a lift there and back, if sharing a car. Parking at Baan Doi Pui costs 30 Baht per car.

Tips

Bring around 2 liters of water or more, some kind of lunch or snacks, good footwear, hat, walking stick, insect repellant, sunblock, etc.

The arboretum

The Arboretum (otherwise known as Suan Luukachaat Huay Kaeow or Huay Kaeow Excercise park) is out along Huay Kaeow Rd.
From the moat driving out along Huay Kaeow Rd you will immediately pass Kad Suan Kaeow shopping mall on the left.
Go straight on through the first big intersection Amari Rincombe intersection.
Go straight on further past the Phucombe intersection (you will see a dunkin doughnut on the corner).
Go past the front entrance to Chiang Mai University.
After less than a kilometre you will see a small park on your left. This is the arboretum.
We meet at the car park just after the arboretum, well before Chiang Mai Zoo. It is a small car park, at the back there are some food stalls, away from the road. We meet about 10 meters in from the road.
