Sixteen hikers showed up for the Sunday hike from the arboretum to the coffee shop. Since Mike also was offering an alternative return from the 5 way junction, 2 hikers elected to take advantage of that, and later a 3rd one joined them.

On the way up another hiker decided to return, and then farther on one more decided to take a side trail going back via Chang Khian waterfall.

So by the time we had completed the planned hike there were only 11 of us, just the right number to fill the song tao back from the coffee shop. For that we paid 120 baht each, a price all seemed to feel was very reasonable.

The leader found the steeper sections of the trail rather hard and had to stop more often than she would have liked, but the kind hiking group accommodated her by stopping to rest with her, and so we gradually made our way up to the 5 way junction, arriving about 12:15.

After a short snack break we continued on up to Ban Khun Chang Khian, where we re-stocked our drink supplies before going on to the coffee shop.

Throughout we had good weather, feeling the air cool even though we were soaked with sweat from the exertion, and there were no falls or injuries.

I felt it was a landmark hike for the group, a first time for the Sunday hikers to hike all the way up to the coffee shop. And all enjoyed lunch and refreshments at the coffee shop. Some of us also bought avocados and macadamia nuts which were grown there.

2. Downhill with Mike

Thanks to Janet for leading today’s hike, very enjoyable, as usual. The three downhill hikers started out well and, after a little orchard interval, managed to find Richard’s downed tree over the Chang Khian stream and then followed a very narrow trail slowly and gently downhill until we eventually joined the main trail down to Wang Bua Ban, the junction being very well concealed. A little lower down though, after wandering a short distance off that trail, we came to a four way junction and managed to take the wrong trail, heading over the 810m ‘peak’ and on down to Chang Khian waterfall, thereafter following Philip’s shortcut back on to the Wang Bua Ban trail. Eventually got back to the cars about 3.45, I think, after a cool drink at the first shop we met.
