Ulf and Nelson

Ulf and Nelson

Ulf with his little dog, Nelson, led this hike, and Anders helped from the rear position. A group of 12, including several new hikers, plus 2 dogs, showed up at the arboretum, and 4 or 5 more hikers joined us at the starting point near the Waterfall Café. In spite of the heat we kept up a pretty good pace, but needed frequent stops to re-group and keep ourselves hydrated. The first hour and a half was a steady uphill, which induced 2 hikers to drop out because of the heat.

From there on the roller coaster began, alternately down a bit and up a bit. When we came down to the stream we stopped for about 20 minutes to eat our snacks, while a few also took off their shoes to enjoy a cool foot bath. As we continued along the roller coaster trail with several surprise turns onto a new trail, the heat began to take its toll, and more and longer rest stops were needed. The last hour was a steady downhill on loose rocks requiring vigilance and great care not to fall. We were all happy to arrive at the Waterfall Café where we could be refreshed, have lunch, fruit smoothies, and coffee.
Total distance covered was about 10 km (depending on whose GPS was to be believed), elevation gain was 613 meters, and time elapsed was 4 ½ hrs.
Thanks to Ulf and Anders for a well-led hike!
