22 hikers met up outside Promenada Mall at 7.30 & proceeded east on
highway 1317, meeting up with the 3 hike leaders Andrew, Alexander &
Peter near San Kamphaeng. No cars got separated from
the convoy. It was a cool clear morning when we arrived
at the start point, next to a small temple at the base of Doi Ton,
surrounded by flowering mango orchards. .
At 8.40 Alexander, Andrew & Peter led the way up the “motorcycle
road” to the Chedi atop Doi Ton. Within a few hundred metres, 5 year
old Peter decided his short legs would be best suited to a slower
pace at the rear of the pack, keeping an eye out for stragglers.
Alexander remained at the head of the group with Anders.
After about 3.7 km hiking there was a small sala where hikers paused
for snacks & to allow slower members to catch up. After this point
the trail became steeper before reaching the top after just over 5 km
total walk. From the Chedi, views across the valley were not as clear
as they could be, but at least Doi Suthep was visible.
After a lunch break we began the hike back down, following the same
trail we had ascended. This was quicker than coming up & even 5 year
old Peter found reserves of energy that had been lacking on the way
up. As the last of the group arrived back at the start point at
13.15, a group of offroad bikers were preparing to attempt the ascent. After the hike some of us went to a restaurant and some headed back to the city.
Total length of hike 10.9 km, total ascent 540 m. Hike time, about 4
hours 30 mins.
