140831_Trip Report_Baan Mai Wang Pha Pun Circular Hike.

On Sunday morning, after a night with heavy rainfalls , some drizzle in the morning hours and a not too favorable weather forecast for the day , we had still an intriguing number of 12 hard core hikers showing up at our meeting point.

We were driving around 50 minutes to our Starting point where surprisingly a blue sky and sunshine were inviting us for our hike .

At 8:40 am we started our hike , walking slowly to Mae Wang River and after around 15 minutes , we had to cross the Mae Wang River by a using bamboo bridge .

We then walked along the river and lychee- and cornfields, had to walk uphill a bit until we arrived at another water stream after around 15 minutes time. Along the water stream it was very slippery , but we had to proceed our hike for 100 to 200 meters along the stream before we started to walk uphill again.

After around 2 hours we were taking a small break , then we continued to climb uphill to a viewpoint at a small open area from where we were able to see the small village with the burger restaurant which we planned to visit after our hike .

More uphill walking had to be done after our stop at the viewpoint and after a total hiking time of around 3 hours , we had our lunch on the top of the mountain. After lunch, we went around 300 meters along a ridge before we came to a 2-way junction where Anders with 3 hikers was taking one trail in order to find our previous exploration trail and Pam with 7 of us was taking the other (new)  trail with the ambition to rejoin the 2 groups later.

Unfortunately life does not always give us what we may expect at certain moments and we were not able to find a trail bringing us back together with the first group. Nevertheless, we were deeply impressed by the beauty of the scenery and after having discussed our available options, we decided to continue hiking along the new trail.

We were somehow compensated for missing the first group by coming across a flock of cows relaxing along the trail and obviously wondering which kind of creatures interrupted their nap.

We used the opportunity for some pictures and continued our walk , mostly on flat or slightly downhill terrain until we came to a 5 -way junction where we decided to take a trail which should  bring us back to our starting point — again an example of human illusion. We had to climb down a pretty steep slope for around 100 meter , arrived at yet another water stream ,

crossed the water stream and found a hill tribe village on the other side. We asked the local people there how we could find our way back to the Mae Wang River, continued our hike and came to a river , which was not the Mae Wang River.  Walking along the river, we met a Thai person with 2 foreigners who explained us how to come back to “our” village . We followed the way he was describing to us and were passing a gorgeous waterfall with a small laguna lake where a big group of foreign tourists were enjoying themselves.

Continuing our hike along the water stream we were for some time stuck behind another big hiking group and could only overtake them when we were coming to a wider dirt road.

We arrived then at a village which was still around 5 KM away from the village we intended to go to, where we then decided to ask if somebody would be able to bring us by car over to the burger restaurant.

We were successful and met Anders , who had to wait for us for around 1 hour 40 minutes. Finally the group walking with Pam had something to eat too while Anders was going back to the city with 2 hikers.

Total time of the Hike: Anders group 4 hours 50 minutes–Pam group 6 hours 30 minutes.

Thanks to the hardcore hikers for joining this hike !!

  1. I thought the exploring hikes were during the week, not at weekends! Look forward to seeing the gpx trail of that one on the map.
