Hike to Top of Doi Ton following motorbike road.
Doi Ton is a 890m high peak on the eastern edge of the Chiang Mai valley, on the Chiang Mai / Lamphun boundary. There is a white stupa on top of the cliffs overlooking the valley.
We will drive about 30km from Promenada out past Alpine Golf Course to the base of the mountain & the start of the trail. The last 1 km of the drive is along a dirt road. The dirt & rocky road to the top of the cliffs is 5 km long, climbing about 450 m in elevation. It’s a fairly easy hike up to the stupa. Good sturdy shoes or boots required due to the rocky nature of the road. If the weather is clear, we should get great views across the valley to Doi Suthep & Doi Inthanon. After a short break to take in the views, we shall head east from the dirt road up onto the higher parts of Doi Ton & then south along the ridge to the summit, where we will break for lunch. Total distance from start point to lunch spot is 7 km.
After the lunch break, we begin the steep & rocky descent heading west, with great views of Doi Ton cliffs & summits. This is a quite steep in parts, but there is a path. Hiking sticks recommended.
Back down at valley level, we hike 3 km along dirt roads through orchards back to the start point.
Total hike length 14.5 km with about 700 m climb. Hike duration 6 hours.
