15/10/25_The Two Caves Hike.

Please be aware:

Hikes are volunteer led. This means:

  • You are responsible for your own safety at all times.

This is the same hike that was offered by Andrew for 6th September, but had to be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. Deep appreciation to Andrew for his excellent hike description, which is lifted below in faithful detail.

This is a relatively easy hike with only one difficult passage. A very steep climb in trackless terrain through bamboo forest. Gaining altitude of 100 meters over a very short distance. The rest of the hike takes place on dirt roads in open farmland
As we will have to share cars together, please bring a towel and a second shirt with you. In case you are a passenger, please contribute to the costs of gasoline with THB 100 per person.

2 caves hike

Total distance about 13 km Altitude at start/ end: 453 M Highest point: 888 M.

Estimated Time: 6 H (includes  sightseeing 2 caves 2 hours

The hike starts at Samoeng Rd, approximately 20 minutes’ drive from The Night Safari . We walk up in the agricultural landscape until we reach the foot of a high plateau, where the dirt road ends. A path leads us through a bamboo forest to the first cave.

First Cave

First Cave

After the first cave, we have a very steep ascent through the bamboo jungle up to the high plateau. It is a difference in altitude of 100 meters over a very short distance. But the bamboo terrain is quite open, so there is no major problem. Up on the plateau, we will have our lunch in a farmers hut. Now we walk on the upland in a Karst landscape.

Upland Farms

Upland Farms

This time of the year it is full of cabbages and chilli crops. Amazing views. The second cave (Tak Tan Cave) is a government project that seems to have been abandoned. The cave is quite large ,with high ceilings.  Details say 600 meter deep, and with the help of our flashlights we can get far inside. After we walk back a bit on the same  dirt road we came. Follow road down towards a mountain village with Hmong people. Here we encounter the tarmac road that leads us down to Samoeng Rd.  The road winds down through the countryside. Stunning views of Doi Pui / Doi Suthep .

Important, bring your own flashlight .For your own safety and your pleasure. .
