On this cool, sunny day, 25 hikers showed up at the meeting point. Welcome back to to a few hikers we had not seen in many months! The drive to Doi Radar took just over an hour and, thanks to Anders, we found the turn off without passing it by. It was about 9am when we set off, Janet initially in the lead and Mike G. as the “sweeper”. Very soon a few young hikers, new to the group, took the lead. The group did not manage to stay together throughout the hike, but we did regroup at least twice, and found that one hiker had gone ahead alone. In between watching our feet and catching our breath, we had moments to enjoy the beautiful views, and when we reach the high ridge my phone began to ring…a call from Mike B. with his group of 5 who had started at 5:30am to do the whole Doi Lanka Nature Trail hike, to say that they were on peak 3 and could see our group. We searched the horizon, but couldn’t spot them.
By 11:30 we had reached a level, shady spot where some of us stopped for lunch. By then the larger part of the group were all in front and had started up to the next peak. I had in mind to eat and then turn back, but it was not to be, for this hardy group was determined to reach the higher peak before eating.
During a short breather I spotted a small bush with this bloom of tiny flowers which look like azalea.
At 12:15 we started back, leaving the “peak group” to catch up with the help of Mike G. as co-leader. And so the original group gradually arrived back at Doi Radar around 2pm, while the remaining group also came in gradually up until 4pm. Thanks to all who helped with this hike and those who waited for the leader during her recovery breaks.
