16/01/24_Hot springs Swedish sauna

group

Warning: the exploration hike on Friday was very hot, the ridge is at low elevation and the trail is not well-shaded. If you choose to join the hike, bring at least 2.5-3 litres of water/rehydration drink, a sunhat, sunglasses, sunscreen and long sleeves/pants. The trail is also very rocky with loose stones on steep slopes, so strong ankle boots with thick soles are strongly recommended. Please read other warnings below. This is a preview of what our up-coming hot season hikes will be like. There is also a strong chance of unseasonal rain.

An 11 km ridge walk, with good valley views, taking in a number of peaks (max. alt. 756m, min 342m), starting at Crazy Horse buttress near Muang On cave and finishing near Sankamphaeng hot springs so we can have a relaxing swim in the hot pool after the hike, if not already too hot. Those with energy left after the 6 hour hike can visit the cave and maybe say hi to the Macaque monkey troop in the cave area.

.
Mainly stony/rocky trails so boots recommended rather than sandals or trainers. One trail section is very narrow above quite a steep drop, so bring a good sense of balance. Occasional sections of the trail are not clear. Early start necessary to get the low altitude climbing finished before it gets too hot, and to leave time in the afternoon for the (optional) hot springs and/or cave visits.

If you want to join
Just turn up at the meeting place on the day, on time. We cannot accommodate groups and cannot guarantee seats in cars. Well-behaved dogs welcome on the hike, but not in the hot springs area. Please give 100 baht to your driver towards fuel costs if you need a lift, and bring a change of clothes for the return journey. Apparently we have had some stingy/stinky passengers recently.

.
Meeting Place
We will meet at 07.00 in front of Promenada Mall on H.1317.  Then we head straight out along the H.1317 Sankamphaeng Bypass past Ban On and leave some vehicles at the hot springs car park (GPS co-ords 18.8141802,99.229331), before returning to the Crazy Horse buttress area behind Muang On cave hill.
Please see the maps below (click to enlarge).
