Even though this was a very hot morning there were 14 who showed up for a hike, including a few new faces. As we had sufficient cars to drive to the starting point at Baan Doi Pui, we piled in and made it up to the village by 8:45, and were soon on the trail. The temperatures up here were quite a bit lower than down in town, so we moved along at a moderate pace. In less than an hour we arrived at the point where we would turn right and begin the steep ascent toward Doi Pui summit, and there 2 of the new hikers decided to return to the village. We stopped to rest and drink a number of times on the way up before reaching the road which runs from the check point to Princess Sala area and, when we saw the large cleared area which the park set up for training sessions, we took advantage of the benches and cool shade to have a snack break. From here it was just 200 meters to the summit. A few souvenir photos, and then we continued on, starting the descent back to the “check point road” and on down until we reached the small trail on the right which would take us to a temple and on to the long, steep staircase back to the village. We found that trail neglected, clogged with leaves and quite slippery.
Shortly before 1pm we were seated at our favorite khao soy restaurant and enjoyed a leisurely lunch.
We covered 8.35 km. in 2 hr. and 35 min. with an additional hr. and 10 min. of rest stops. The elevation gain was just over 600 meters with an equal descent.
Thanks to all the good hikers who walked with energy and enthusiasm!
