This week’s hike will be an easy one starting from the Tung Roeng agricultural research centre, south of the Samoeng road, & following the Khanin river valley. It’s a repeat of the hike we did last year in the rainy season.
Please check the website on Sunday morning before leaving for the meet point. This hike should go ahead even if raining, unless we get a deluge of biblical proportions.
I cycled the route this week & the trail is clear & the stream crossings are low. As the water level might rise a little with the current rain, it would be advisable to carry sandals if you are determined to keep boots dry.
This time we will hike the route in the reverse direction, heading south from the start point & descending to the stream, then follow the valley northwest through beautiful karst scenery to the village of Ban Mae Khanin Nuea on Samoeng Road. On the way, we will make a small detour to visit a small cave at the bottom of limestone cliffs.
From the Samoeng Road, we will ascend a steep, farm road, before descending back to the start point.
Hike length 10km, with about 300m elevation gain. Should take less than 4 hours, & we can stop off for refreshments at a restaurant on the Samoeng road , on our drive back to Chiang Mai.
As we will have to share cars together, please bring a towel and a second shirt with you. In case you are a passenger, please contribute to the costs of gasoline with THB 100 per person.
Hike leader: Andrew.
If you want to join, just turn up at the meeting place on the day and on time. We cannot accommodate groups & a place in a car is not guaranteed.
