16/06/19 There and Back, again!

At this time of year, always check this webpage on the Sunday morning before leaving. Hikes may be changed or cancelled at short notice due to the weather conditions.

For those who missed this hike earlier in the year, and anyone else up for a longer hike we will be making a re-run (or should that be re-hike?) of this loop.  Starting at Wat Doi Suthep we will take the forest trail up to Five Way Junction, have a short break and then follow the dirt road up to Ban Khun Chang Kian where we will take a longer break.  Once replenished we will continue on through the village and follow a trail down through the forest and on to a dirt road which passes through farmland and leads back up to the Five Way Junction, once again, where we will take another short break before retracing our steps back to Wat Doi Suthep.

The trails are well marked and the going is, generally, quite easy with no steep ascents or descents and in the shade for most of the time however,  reasonable fitness is required and it maybe slippery in places so good boots/shoes are a must and a pole is recommended.  Total hike distance is about 18km. with a total ascent of just over 800mtrs. and expected to take about 6hrs.

Hike leader: Peter G-B

If you want to join, be sure you have read the general advice on this website, as well as this particular post. If you still think the hike is for you then just turn up at the meeting place on the day and on time.

We cannot accommodate groups.

Meeting Place

We will meet in the car park of the Huay Kaeow Arboretum (just before the Zoo) at 07:45 for an 08:00 start.  From there we will carpool/songthaew to the start point.

  • Head straight out from the moat 3.5 km towards Doi Suthep on Huay Kaeow Road.
  • The arboretum is on the left after the front entrance to Chiang Mai University and just before the entrance to the Zoo.
  • The car park of the arboretum is at the end of the park near the zoo.

See the maps below (click to enlarge them).

Bring :

  • around 2-3 liters of water or more
  • good footwear, hat, rain wear, insect repellent and sun-block
  • 50 Baht contribution for fuel if you need lifts from Arboretum to the start point and back or songthaew fare (usually about 80 Baht for the round trip). Car places are usually available, but cannot be guaranteed.
  • spare shirt, washing flannel, bag for boots etc to avoid in-car smelliness on return drive.
  • snacks.
  • energy, enthusiasm and a good sense of humour.

Just check the site for details a few days before and re-check on the morning of the hike…it’s the rainy season now and if the weather is bad the scheduled hike may be cancelled or changed. Please also read the what to do, what to bring and dangers tabs. We look forward to seeing you.
