17/06/04_Trip report_Doi Mai Mee Cheu

22 hikers initially split into two groups: 9 ‘shorter’ and 13 ‘longer’ hikers but, over the course of the day, the slower, shorter group gradually absorbed more of the ‘longer’ group until we were actually all together at the end point of the shorter hike, only 9 kms walk away from the ‘longer’ hikers transport, after about four and a half hours. Mr K kindly took pity on them and filled his pickup with weary walkers.

The there-and-back-again group set off in good spirits and pace but a combination of heat, humidity and hill reduced the group’s number after the first and steepest section.  Undeterred, the remaining hikers, now consisting of a majority of first-timers (hats off to you guys!) continued and reached the turn-around point on time but tired and looking forward to the post hike refreshments.  After a quick discussion, darkening skies and a distant rumble of thunder it was decided to become the advance party of the short hike group and, after snacks, continued to the finish which was a lot closer.

Note to hike leaders: the Susco petrol station management have asked us not to park in their carpark, so we will have to park outside in future.

  1. Hey guys. My name is Nathan and I had the pleasure of meeting many of you on the three passes trek in Nepal this past march. I was the Canadian hiking with the American girl with a guide and porter. I’m bad with names but remember Oliver and Peter. A few had mentioned to look you guys up if I came to Chiang Mai for some hiking suggestions. Would love to touch base if possible. I’ll be in northern Thailand late june. Hope everyone is well

    • Hi Nathan. Will send you an email. Many of us will not be in town at the end of June (escaping the rainy season?) but the Sunday hikes will definitely continue; watch this space.
