17/06/11 Huay Chang Khian Huay Mae Yuak Loop

Update 0630 – The hike is on but rain is forecast for late morning/early afternoon so wet weather gear advisable

As the rainy season is upon us check this webpage on Sunday morning before leaving home as the hike may be changed, or cancelled, at short notice.

This loop is a combination of sections from 4 other hikes and starts at the Scout Camp with a fairly gentle ascent up to the (in)famous Porcupine Falls.  The trail then continues up through light forest until joining a dirt road, there is one steepish section of about 200mtrs towards the end of this section.  The dirt road leads into some lychee orchards, there were still some lychees there earlier in the week.  After leaving the orchards we will take a trail along a ridge that leads back down to the Scout Camp, passing Chang Khian waterfall on the way and offering an opportunity to visit it for those who missed out on the 3 Waterfalls Hike a few weeks ago.

The loop is about 12kms long with a total ascent of around 800mtrs with good trails and, apart from the one steep section mentioned, the terrain is not difficult however good boots are essential and a pole/stick highly recommended as the trails are slippery in places.  Additional water is also recommended as it could be very humid on the lower section of the hike.  Estimated time 6hrs.

If you want to join
If you are sure this hike is for you, after reading our “dangers”, “what to bring” and “what to do” tabs, just turn up at the meeting place on the day; there is no need to let us know you are coming. No groups please.

Meeting Place
We will meet at 0720 for an 0730 start where Huay Chang Khian meets Soi Chang Khian, just before the scout camp at the end of the soi.  Approx <18°49’25.24″ N  98°56’55.24″ E>
Head out from the moat NW towards Doi Suthep on Huay Kaew Rd.
Turn right onto the Irrigation Canal Rd opposite the Phucome Hotel.
Take the second soi, at the next traffic lights just before the old Fine Thanks restaurant, then bear left at the Y-junction (this is now a one-way system) and again right at the T-junction onto Soi Chang Khian.
Continue along the main soi, bearing left at the mini roundabout, and continue for 2kms, almost to the end of the soi. (Follow signs to Neo Café and then continue past the café for about 300mtrs)
