17/09/24_Mae Khanin Valley Hike

PHOTO_20160605_101838This hike is a repeat of a hike led by Andrew in June 2016. It is an easy hike through spectacular scenery and is made particularly beautiful in the wet season by the deep green of the paddy fields. For those complaining of recent northern bias, this hike is south of Chiang Mai off the Hang Dong to Samoeng Road.

The hike will commence at the Tung Roeng agricultural research centre. We start on a wide farm road heading west through avocado orchards to the village of Ban Mae Khanin Neua. There are two options for the last part of this section – the road winds down to the village but is being upgraded and during our recce was a bit of a muddy mess. The alternative is a short-cut trail that the group has used before. This option is slightly shorter but has become overgrown during the wet season and will require some gentle bushwhacking. Mud or scrub, the choice will be yours.

From the village we follow the valley of the Khanin River south and then south-east through beautiful karst scenery with some small caves in the cliffs along the river, which we will make a detour to visit. Below the caves it will be necessary to ford the river several times. During this week’s recce the maximum water depth was just below knee level.

Finally we climb up out of the river valley and back to the research station.

Hike length 11 kilometers with approximately 300 meters of total elevation gain. Under current conditions we expect the hike will take between 3 1/2 and 4 hours.

Given that this is a fairly short hike, a lunch stop is not planned. However, we will make time for a short snack break. There will be an option to stop during the drive back for lunch and refreshments.

As we will have to share cars together. please bring along a towel and a change of clothes. In case you are  a passenger please contribute TB 100 towards the cost of gasoline.
