17/12/24_Doi Nhog special trip

For this hike you should register by Monday 18th December. See details below.

Doi Nhog alias Doi Nork

Doi Nhog alias Doi Nork

This is a special day trip featuring a steep hike to the summit of Doi Nhog: a spectacular peak in Doi Luang National Park. Its name (sometimes written in Western script as “Doi Nork”) means “hump peak”. The trip demands more travel, time and expense than usual, but should be worth it. We are arranging this together with the village head and community organization of Ban Pong Tham, which is the gateway for access to the peak.

We need to have the list of participants by next Monday – 18th December – to pass to the village and park authorities. If you wish to join this hike, please confirm by email to Chan at chainlander@hotmail.com, stating your name and that of any accompanying hiker(s). We will then send you the details of the meeting place etc.

It is a full-day trip. We will meet at 6.40 am, and drive to the village, arriving around 8.15am. Getting things together there is expected to take up to a further hour. Then we ride on tractor-trailers to the starting point of the hike. The hiking will begin about 10am, and take about 5 hours. We return by tractor trailer to the village around 4pm, and will then have a meal prepared by the villagers. Expect to arrive back in Chiang Mai about 7pm.

The hike involves a very steep final ascent and descent (see picture) so it is not for inexperienced hikers or those with a fear of heights. However, if you wish to hike only to the Buddha shrine at the base, and wait there while other climb, that is possible. Before registering your name (via the email address above) make sure you have read the general hiking advice on this website, and carefully read the particular details in this post. Note that you will need a good sense of balance and head for heights on the peak and that you are responsible for your own safety at all times.

  • Approximate costs:
  • THB 180 for transport by car-share or by songthaew
  • THB 100 for contribution to Ban Pong Tham village organizers
  • THB 300 for tractor return trip (variable depending on ratio of passengers to tractors)
  • THB 100 for meal/drink in village (or more if you drink a lot
