18/12/23 Pilgrim’s Trail Alternative Loop (sort of)

This Sunday’s hike is a numerically short distance of 9km, but given that a significant portion of the hike will be on rather overgrown and unclear trails that from time to time weave up hill and down dale around or cross waterfalls, will prove challenging for most. The hike will commence with an immediate climb of 375 metres on a good trail through forest before taking us up to the observation platform on the main hill road to Wat Suthep.

There we will take a few minutes to enjoy the view across Chiang Mai before crossing the road to re-enter the forest once more. It is from this point that trails become difficult to follow. After an hour of progress through the forest hopefully without getting lost, we will stumble onto the Pilgrim’s Trail path. Following the Trail downhill via Wat Pha Lat and beyond, we then branch right into difficult forest terrain once more. Another hour or so of this will see us emerge at the start point and thus the end of the hike.  Total hike time about 4-5hrs, total ascent about 550 metres.

If you want to join:

Read the “What to do” and “Things to bring” sections.
Just turn up at the meeting place on the day and on time.
We cannot accommodate groups.

Meeting Point and Time:

We will meet at 0800 at the westernmost end of Suthep Road, outside of Ban Choeng Doi Suthep School, which is well beyond the main southern Chiang Mai University gates (see map for directions).  From here it is about 1km. to the start point.

Items to Bring/Wear/Prepare:

  • at least 2 litres of water and/or rehydration drink
  • energy snacks and/or a picnic brunch
  • strong footwear with good grip and ankle support
  • sticks recommended
  • sunhat, sunscreen, insect repellant
  • long sleeves/pants recommended
  • plenty of energy, enthusiasm, team spirit and good humour.

  1. Hi,
My mum, sister, girlfriend and I are very keen to do this walk on Sunday. Would it be possible for us to join you?

    Thanks a lot,

    • No problem, just turn up at the meeting point by 0800

  2. Thanks for getting back to me! We won’t be able to join in the end as we’ve been out all day today but maybe next time! 🙂
