Hiking in the current air conditions (AQI around 200) is not for everyone (please don’t do it if you have any breathing issues), but a few might be interested in this shortish hike in the slightly weird softened light.
The hike is “semi-exploratory” in that it seeks to follow a path that has appeared in the online maps in the last year or two, but which the leader has not actually tested. This path begins in the “Banana Avenue” area of Queen Sirikit Botanic Gardens (QSBG) and climbs the ridge on the eastern side. If it works, then, having got well above the main hothouse and viewpoint area, we will descend to this area, and make our way back to the start through the central forest part of the gardens.
Estimated distance is 6km with about 300m elevation gain and loss. Note that the standard entrance charge to QSBG for non-Thai adults is THB 150. A year or two ago, non-Thais over 60 were being allowed in without charge, but we are unsure if this is still the case.
Leader: Michael
If you would like to join: Consider if you are confident of being able to hike in these hot and smoky conditions. If you still think the hike is for you, just turn up at the stated place and time. Car-lift from the meeting place to the start point is usually available: please offer your driver THB 100 toward cost of fuel etc.
Meeting places and times
- EITHER 07:50 for an 8am start from the open area in front of (not inside) the 700-year Stadium complex, by Canal Road (H121).
- OR 08:30 at the car parking area outside the gateway of QSBG.
Please bring: As per standard advice (see tabs above), but especially: patience, curiosity and good humour.
